Course Duration

This program is delivered as either a 2 or 3 day course. Learners may choose either the 2 or 3 day option based on their preference, however if a student is identified as having low LLN using the LLN test they will be required to complete the 3 day course..

Unit Descriptor

This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to operate a boom-type EWP safely in accordance with all relevant legislative requirements. Competence in this unit, does not in itself result in a HRWL licence to operate this plant.

A boom-type elevating work platform is a type of access equipment that consists of a telescopic boom and basket used to reach a work area. Boom-type elevating work platforms may be self propelled or mounted onto trucks or trailers.

A person operating a boom-type elevating work platform with a boom length of 11 metres or more is required to hold a WP High Risk Work Licence (HRWL).

This unit requires a person operating a boom-type EWP to:

  • plan for the work/task
  • prepare for the work/task
  • perform work/task
  • pack up

Pre-requisites and Licensing / Regulatory Information

There are no pre-requisites for this unit of competency. However students must be able to complete the National Assessment Instrument in accordance with the instructions and assessment requirements for that instrument. In particular, learners must have sufficient English language to complete the assessment without the use of an interpreter, assistant or any reference materials.

Legislative and regulatory requirements are applicable to this unit of competency.

This unit is based on the licensing requirements of Part 4.5 of the Model Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulations and meets Commonwealth, State and Territory HRWL requirements.

The National Assessment Instrument (NAI) is the mandated assessment for the HRWL to operate the relevant licencing class as detailed in this unit.
